A great website .. but I remember earlier years around 1954. I was still at school and would catch the bus up the Port Road and then walk along Coglin Street and the traffic was bumper to bumper.
One night "Joe Blow" towing his speedcar pulled up and offered me a lift. I was so excited I don't think my feet touched the ground all night.
We would stand up against the safety fence at the south eastern end and get showered in mud. But I can't believe we used to slip out between the rails of the fence out onto the track while the race was still running to snatch the goggles the riders and drivers would flick off when they became covered in mud. We'd wait till they went passed and then run out and back before they came around again!
They were the days before "health & safety" made life boring. The hot dogs there were to die for and I think I had my first Chicko Roll at Rowley Park. Later in life I got the chance to drive a hot rod in a celebrity Demolition Derby a couple of times and then went there with an ambulance for St.John. What a hoot being out in the centre
I've been to Murray Bridge ... but nothing compares with Rowley Park. Does anyone remember that song they used to play while the water truck went around ? It went .."woop" in the middle and the whole crowd would go "woop" when it came up. |

his love for cars & racing has been passed down from his two sons, my uncle (Steve Hennig, also known for his racing) & my father (Mark Hennig) who isn't well known for the racing he had done. then to my brother (Kenny Hennig) who also has a love for cars & drifts regularly at Mallala. i as the only female Hennig of the past 3 generations i too love racing.

Thanks for a great site! I live on Francis Ridely Circuit probably on top of the mound where I used to watch the bikes and midgets race! I'd love to get some of the photos to frame and put up in our house.
By the way, when they named all the street in this area they used older historical names (Like Francis Ridely after the ship) rather than some of the racing names.
My father in law (Ramon Munn) raced side cars at Rowkey Park and my 'milkie' (remember when milk was delivered?!) Mr. Foote raced there and was killed in an accident ther I believe?
Anyway, great site! Brought back lots of memories.

My memories of Rowley Park before we moved to the Barossa Valley. We lived at Croydon Park, then at Prospect, during 1956 and '57. My dad, Eddie White, was the mechanic at Jack Larritt's Golden Fleece service station at Torrens Road, Ovingham, and Jack owned racing car number ten, 'Old Smokey' which dad prepared for the track.
My brother Gary and I, aged five and seven respectively in 1957, used to go to the track with dad every Friday night. We loved the polka music blaring out of the horn speakers all around the track, the smell of castor oil laced petrol, the taste of Chicko Rolls, the swell and the noise of the crowd, the yellow lights, the roar of the engines, the speed and the constant struggle for grip and sideways-arcing slide of the cars and bikes, the acrobatics of the riders and sidecar men, and the breathless, fearful excitement when somebody crashed. We were shaken coldly and bluntly when Brian Bennett fell from a sidecar and was run over on the fifteenth of November, 1957. He landed spreadeagled and hardly had time to move when a following bike collected him. He did not move at all and, young as we were, we knew he was dead.
The closest we saw 'Old Smokey' get to winning was a respectable third. Dad took the family to the Barossa valley in 1958 and we never went to Rowley Park again, but we must have gone for about seventy race meetings in a row, and except for the night Brian Bennett died, enjoyed every night there. |

Hi there. Great site,I can almost smell the wonderful aroma of Rowley Park in the 50's. Reading the info on the past announcers over the time the great venue entertained us,there is one name missing from those mentioned who came before the O'conners,Kelvins and Sabines and that was the late Mel Cameron from radio station 5DN. My recolections of Mel Cameron extend back to the 50's and his manner on the mike made all who were there feel like they were part of the speedway itself. Not only did he keep every one up to date on all the happenings of the racing but always gave great commentary on the other events like the annual fireworks display. I could prattle on for ages about 'the Park' .Keep up the good work on this wonderful sight. Thanks for the memories. |

I started riding passenger for Keith Sewell in 1978 after he won the Australian sidecar title at Rowley park. We made many visits to the track back then and enjoyed the hospitality the South Australians put on for us. We had some great races between Deane Taylor. Dave Adams and many of the top South Australian riders. It was a shame when it closed and moved to Speedway park. It wasn't the same. |

Thunderbird Raceway was on the right hand side heading towards Adelaide but on the Northern end of Virginia. Thunderbird Raceway was at the main oval and was refurbished when it was closed. I remember the Primary School being right next door. Yes we to have many great memories of Rowley Park, Murray Bridge, Speedway City etc: |

My father was a photographer at rowley park. He and myself are quite clearly seen on that Rowley Park VHS video showing pics and footage from the reunion night in I believe 2001
I used to ride in the water truck now and then in 74 to 79 during the interval.
I was only very young in Rowleys final six years but I remember it well
As for Speedway City - I live in virginia and always have and it is not iout in the never never and I love the place

Many good memories smelling the methanol in a brilliant atmosphere so close to the city. Rowley should still be operating today. Id expect the place would be selling out week after week because of its atmosphere and location. Great website. |
